Just What is a QR Code Anyways?

A QR code (it stands for “Quick Response”) is a mobile phone readable barcode that in it’s simplest sense is a “print based hypertext link” – simply encode a URL into the QR Code and then point a mobile phone (or other camera-enabled mobile) at it. If the device has had QR Code scanning software installed on it, it will fire up its browser and go straight to that URL. They can also be used digitally – you can append a QR code to a Tweet, or they can be displayed on a web page to transfer information directly to the mobile phone. This technology is blurring the distinction between smart phones, digital destination and content, and paper-based communications (see Wikipedia – QR Codes for more information).

QR technology provides cell phone users the ability to scan paper-based content using the cell phone’s camera to decode information on a menu, magazine, business card, gift card, coupon or website. Once the QR code has been scanned and decoded, the user has access via their cell phone to the information or destination that can be any of the following:

Popular Print Applications

– Business Cards: link to a web link, map link or V-Card download to mobile phone
– Sell Sheets: link to web link to that product or service
– Direct Mail: link to web link specific to mailing for tracking purposes
– Event Hand-outs: link to Youtube video
– Show Passes: link to attendees email address, contact information or pre-purchased coupons
– Social Media Expansion: link to Facebook “Like” page, Foursquare check-in or Twitter Fee
– Real Estate: link to website listing for specific property or schedule appointment page
– Retail: store point of sale directing customer to extended product information
– Fundraising: link directly to “make a donation” webpage
– And much, much more!
